Philosophy of Education
When I was a junior in college a professor said to me “If the teacher tells the student, they know it, but if the student tells the teacher, they own it.” At the time this seemed like a memorable comment. I never realized though how powerful and true it was until I started my journey as a classroom teacher.
Education is very important in every child's life. The purpose of education is to help children learn the basics they will need to know in order to be successful throughout their lives. Education helps children mature physically, emotionally, and socially. Teachers should work together to motivate children and help them meet these physical, emotional, and social needs. Early childhood experiences shape a person's thinking and behavior that he will have throughout his or her life. A child's education today will prepare them for the world they will be living in tomorrow.
As an educator I try my best to create an environment that will prepare the students for that world. In my classroom the learners can find comforts as well as challenges. I challenge the students with high expectations and encourage them to do their best. The goal in my classroom is for everyone to learn something on a daily basis, me included. I strive to have an attitude that continuously points out the importance of learning and encourages the discovery of learning.
I believe children thrive in an environment that involves stimulation, motivational ideas, manipulatory activities, and a strong structure. These characteristics extend the desire for the students to want to learn. I provide an atmosphere of love, respect, and patience. Through this it is my hope that I am helping each student to build a positive self-concept and an understanding of diversity.
I learn in many ways and therefore do not expect any different from my students. I try my best to implement the lessons and activities according to my students learning styles and interest. Even free play is a learning experience. I have learned a great deal about what interests certain students by watching them at free time. Also, during free time I get a peek at their social maturity.
My goal is to be the most effective educator that I can. This goal is most achievable when parents have an active role in the education of his or her child. I encourage the parents be aware of what is happening in the school as well as the school system. Most importantly though the strong and consistent communication between parents and the teacher is vital. Interactions between home and school help the child feel confident and secure in his or her environment.
Closing Thoughts…
“If a doctor, lawyer, or dentist had 40 people in his office at one time, all of whom had different needs, and some of whom didn’t want to be there and were causing trouble, and the doctor, lawyer, and dentist with out assistance had to treat them all with professional excellence for nine months, then he might have some conception of the classroom teacher’s job.”
