Everyday Mathematics In Our Classroom
Everyday Mathematics covers a broad range of mathematic content areas, or strands. The strands that are emphasized in third grade are: numeration - operations and relations - problem solving - data collection and analysis - geometry - measures - reference frames - rules, patterns, and functions - beginnings of algebra. In this program, emphasis is placed on linking new knowledge to students' past experiences, discussing and sharing new ideas, using and comparing equivalent expressions, expressing numbers in context by using units, and learning about the reversibility of things. Students in our class will have a daily math message on the screen as a warm up. There will be class activities, the student journal, discussions, games and practice as well as the "at home" component called the "Home Link." Students have access to a hardback Student Reference Book which contains mathematical essays that provide examples and explanations, a game section, a data section, a glossary of terms, an index, and an answer key for "Check Your Understanding." The reference book may be used at home, but must be brought back to school each day. If you need an online glossary of math terms, click here: glossary of math terms . If you would like some math games to play at home, click this link. Electronic games are found at www.emgames.com Students have a unique password that allows them access to these games. The Parent Homeroom page has more information.
