AVID Program Syllabus

Course Description: AVID’s unique approach to helping students achieve success begins with WICR – or writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading. WICR forms the basis of the AVID curriculum. Students develop success skills that will help them succeed in rigorous coursework throughout middle school, high school, and college. AVID strategies include the use of a binder for organization, Cornell notes, questioning techniques, tutorials, and writing. Students are accepted into the AVID program after they complete an application and interview process which considers numerous factors including academic data and personal ambition. All students enrolled in the AVID program must display the desire to be successful and demonstrate 100% effort in ALL classes.
Expectations of AVID Students:
* Be on time and prepared for ALL classes
* Turn in assignments on time in ALL classes
* Students will be outstanding models of responsibility
and respect al ALL times
* Students will demonstrate a positive attitude and
participate in ALL classes
Tutorials: Student-led tutorials are an essential component of the AVID program. The tutorial process allows students to work collaboratively to overcome academic obstacles and ensure success their more difficult classes. Students are required to come prepared for tutorials and actively participate with no exceptions.
Binders: Each student is required to keep a single 3-inch binder for all course work. This binder will serve as an organizational tool that contains course work from all of their classes. (Exceptions will be made on an individual basis.) Organization and maintenance of the binder will be essential to success in the AVID class. The binder will be assessed a minimum of 3 times a quarter. In addition, students are required to use a weekly planner for all classes and a monthly calendar to record long-term assignments and due dates.
Learning Logs: Students will be required to complete a written reflection of what are learning in all classes regularly. Learning Logs are to be turned in promptly. They will not be accepted late.

Late and Make-Up Assignments: Students are expected to turn in all course work and homework on time. Students are responsible for recording assignments and due dates for all classes in their planner. Any AVID assignments turned in late will be marked down one letter grade for each day late. Students are responsible for checking with their teachers to determine their missed assignments if they have been absent.
Student Behavior: AVID students are expected to maintain appropriate behavior in all classes. If a student receives two or more referrals during the course of the school year, he/she will be put on AVID probation and may consequently be removed from the program.
Academic Expectations: All AVID students are required to maintain a 2.0 grade point average or higher in all classes. Failure to maintain a C average may result in removal from the program.
