GOVERNMENT/SERVICE LEARNING      Mrs. Wells~Suznavick, Mr. Buchly

During the course of the year you will be asked to master 5 goals:

·        An understanding of the historical development and current status of principle, institutions, and processes of political systems.

·        An understanding of the history, diversity, and commonality of the peoples of the nation and world, the reality of human interdependence, and the need for global cooperation, through a perspective that is both historical and multicultural.

·        An understanding of geographic concepts and processes to examine the role of culture, technology, and the environment in a location and distribution of human activities throughout history.

·        An understanding of the historical development and current status of economic principles, institutions, and processes needed to an effective citizen, consumer, and worker.

·        Demonstrate an understanding of Service Learning by completing 2 projects that demonstrate how one assumes civic and political responsibility.  Failure to complete the projects will result in a 50% for the course and require you to repeat the class. This is a Maryland High School Graduation requirement.

These goals take into consideration the importance of civic education which is necessary to be informed, involved citizens who understands and supports democratic principles, institutions, and processes.  The expectations and indicators of the course focus on the relationship between United States history, politics, and government.

MIDTERM AND FINAL EXAM

All students will be expected to complete a Mid-year evaluation and an end of course evaluation, as determined by the Worcester County Board of Education as well as Benchmark exams for High School Assessments. You will be expected to take a Government Pre Test and you will have a mid-term.

PROGRESS REPORTS

Progress reports are issued to all students regardless of grade.  It is important that your guardians are aware of your class progress. If you do not inform them of your progress in class I will!!!

I also encourage parents to stop by the guidance department and obtain their password to track grades online. Grade will be updated every Friday.

EXTRA CREDIT

Extra credit will be offered to an entire class on a regular basis.  No individual extra credit will be given.  You may not receive extra credit unless you have completed ALL required work first.

GRADES

Your grade will be determined as established by the COUNTY GRADING AND REPORTING POLICY. Averages will be determined by a minimum of 5 grades. Grades are kept on a computer. I am only human and may make mistakes. Please bring them to my attention and we will gladly go over your grades individually. Parents should expect grades to be updated on Fridays; technology willing.

SERVICE LEARNING

During Middle School you completed an infused project within the curriculum of the school. Students’ permanent records were noted. If you are a transfer student or failed to complete the work you will be required to document 20 additional hours during your high school career. In this course your projects must contain planning, action and reflection. Any additional hours are encouraged and will be documented in your permanent records.

Factors that will determine your grade will include:
