Dear Parents,

We recently had an Environmental Specialist come talk to us about Diamondback Terrapins and the Chesapeake Bay.

Diamondback Terrapins, Mascot of the University of Maryland, Maryland State reptile, and subject of the motto: "Fear the Turtle", visited CSS 2nd Grade. Eight hatchlings from the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project on Poplar Island accompanied Miss Katelin Miekle.

Miss Kate, as the students called her, explained the project to improve the environment of the Chesapeake Bay through the restoration of barrier islands like Poplar Island.  The students had the opportunity to learn about the life cycles and habitats of the Terrapins and other Bay animals.

The students assisted Miss Kate in measuring the turtles using calipers, as she explained the importance of the Diamondback Terrapin to the ecosystem.

Miss Kate was impressed with the knowledge of our students and the questions that they asked during the class.   It was a great hands-on learning experience for everyone.

I hope everyone has a safe and restful summer.   Don't forget to do your summer reading and complete the math review packet as well as any unfinished workbook pages.  Return the completed work to your third grade teacher in September.  Good luck in third grade.
