Independent Reading
MCPS curriculum requires all middle school students grades 6-8 to independently read 25 self selected books each academic year. At Kingsview middle school, the monitoring of this objective will be done through English classes.
Ms. Pearce's Expectations
English Class:

You are to read a minimum of 20 minutes per night (including weekends!)

You should always be in the middle of a novel...be sure to choose your next novel before finishing your current book.

You are to bring your novel to class every day...but don't forget to take it home!

Our class will visit the media center every other Tuesday for your book selection convenience.

You will need to choose a book you can finish in 2 weeks

How many pages can you read in 4 minutes? Multiply this # by 50. This should equal the number of pages you can read in 2 weeks @ 20 min per day.

You will be quizzed and expected to turn in a book recommendation every 2 weeks.
Reading Classes:
While the amount of books you read will be monitored by your English teacher, we will be tracking the amount of time you spend reading anything and everything this school year in our Reading class. As discussed in class, research has shown that adding even 5 minutes more to the amount of time you spend reading on a daily basis can increase your vocabulary by 1,000 words per year! Just imagine the impact this could have on your comprehension and performance in other classes! Not to mention improving your fluency, listening, and speaking skills!
We are going to test the research. We will start the school year by identifying our individual and class baseline data. We will then track the amount of time spent reading on a weekly basis.

Every Monday you are to turn in data on the amount of time you spent reading the previous week. This needs to be confirmed and signed by a parent/guardian.

Individually and as a class, we will chart and graph our data.

At the end of each marking period we will retest and compare/contrast the results with our baseline data.
