  Panther Read-A-Thon Requirements

 

Requirements

·          Read 25 books throughout the school year

·          Each book must at least 100 pages (Please note: individual students may have varied length requirements).  In order to encourage students to read books more than 100 pages, Mr. Waldman accepts Read-A-Thons for every 100 pages read.  For example, if a student is reading a 500 page book, he/she can hand in five Read-A-Thons.  The student will have to answer different questions (see below) regarding the book.

·          You must read books from at least 3 genres (mystery, romance, fantasy, science fiction, biography etc)

·          To vary your reading choices, try to read

-          4 books from one author

-          4 books that revolve around an issue or topic

-          4 books from  one genre

 

What counts?

·          Summer reading  

·          Self-selected reading

·          Black-Eyed Susan Books

·          Novels read as a part of your classes

·          Non-fiction books related to a hobby

 

A Read-A-Thon report must be two paragraphs. 

·          The first paragraph must state the name of the book, the author and there needs to be a brief synopsis of what the book is about.

·          The second paragraph has to answer one of the following questions/scenarios:

Characters

-          Compare and contrast a character in the book to yourself.  How are you alike and how are you different?  Could you imagine being friends with this character?  Why or why not?

-          Describe how a character’s lifestyle would change if they lived in your community today.

 

Setting

-          Discuss an important place where the book is set.  Would you like to visit that place?  How would you feel about being there?

-          How would the book change if it were set in your community?

 

Theme

-          Discuss one new ideas about people and their lives you got from the book.

-          Disagree with one of the author’s ideas or opinions.

 

Defend or condemn the book

-          Write a paragraph recommending others to read the book.

-          Write a paragraph explaining why a person should not read the book.
