Five Tips For Becoming An Improved Peer Leader
1. Be Prepared – the peer leader should always know the lesson before hand, and have an idea of what they plan to do with the lesson for that day. Make sure you have talked to your teacher advisor prior to the lesson, so they too understand what the lesson is about.
2. Warm Up/Opening Activity – Get your group warmed up by starting with a fun, simple activity. Get the group members to work together and have them sit in a circle, or sit together as a group. Don’t leave anyone out and make them feel unwelcome.
3. Use All Learning Styles – Try to incorporate all learning styles (kinesthetic, olfactory, etc.) into your lesson, that way all the members in your group feel comfortable.
4. Get Involved – Make sure you stand up and approach your group. Participate in the activities by giving a leading example for your group members to follow.
5. Don’t Point Certain People Out – Ask everyone the same question and let them think about it for a moment before you call on someone. Call on volunteers, and don’t point certain people out and make them feel uncomfortable.
