Read about last year's "Diplomat for a Day" conference.

Five members of the Model United Nations Club at Stephen Decatur traveled to UMBC on Saturday, October 20, 2007 to participate in a simulation conference. The conference, which lasted for one day, included two "workshop" sessions on topics such as researching tips and an introduction to the Model UN, as well as a simulation of a General Assembly meeting.
Model United Nations is a unique chance for students to broaden their horizons by taking on the roles of ambassadors from UN member states. At the UMBC conference, the topic of discussion was Internet governance. Students were charged with passing resolutions that were favorable to their countries while reaching compromises.
"I was very impressed with our students," said Model UN club advisor Mrs. Patrick. "They knew the topic and articulated themselves well during the simulation."
Decatur students Kara Brower, Bonnie Eisenman, Phylicia Kimmel, Matt McKinley, and Kelsey Poloney took on the roles of Japan, Mexico, Kenya, Nigeria, and Angola, respectively.
"It's surreal, in a way," said member Bonnie Eisenman. "You really begin to think from your country's point of view. It's very exciting."
The Stephen Decatur club hopes to attend another conference in the spring. "It's a great club," member Sinead O'Brien said. "I'm looking forward to going on the next trip."
