Course Description:

 

This course focuses on literary and conversational topics that will guide the students in the advanced placement and other internationally approved options.  Specific selections (novels, short stories, plays, poems) will be read and discussed each quarter.  In conjunction with the readings, there will be exercises in advanced structures, vocabulary building, speaking and writing assignments to further develop proficiency in the target language.

 

 

Course Goals/Objectives:

 

The student will be able to:

 

-Obtain information from written and oral sources.

-Process and evaluate information from written and oral sources.

-Communicate with users of target language in a variety of situations.

-Express views and feelings concerning social issues.

-Respond to a variety of situations in target language (i.e. reading literary works, talking notes, writing essays, etc.)

-Enter into discussions and defend their opinions.

Lecture, group work, guided reading, vocabulary development, guided coursework, audio-visual demonstrations.

Make-up Work Policy:

 

The student should contact me as soon as he/she returns to school after being absent, even if he/she does not have class with me that day.  The student can contact me by e-mail Cordero@olgchs.org, by phone ext.3345, and in person.   All students are encouraged to seek extra help whenever necessary.

 

Classroom Procedures/Policies:

 

-The student has to be prepared, on dress code, and on time for every class.

- The student must respect his/her classmates, the teacher, substitute teachers, and the school’s  physical property, including desks and chairs, technological equipment, walls and any display of art.

- The student must raise his/her hand every time he/she needs to talk and wait for the teacher’s prompt to speak.

- The student must not leave his/her seat unless the teacher tells him/her otherwise.

-  Any assignments done by on-line Internet translators are forms of plagiarism and will result in a grade of ZERO.

- The use of the target language is imperative.

Students will analyze how people react in ways that we cannot even imagine.  Students will discuss and approach the ending of the story in many different ways.  

 

 

The class will discuss and research “machismo” in Latin American culture.

Students will read the short story many times.  They will study the characters, descriptions, plot, setting and other pertinent parts of a literary work.

 

Students will write a three-page essay, based on one of the points mentioned before.  The student also has the choice of selecting a theme studied during the year.

 

 

Students will study the new literary gender.

 

 

 

 

Students will read and learn about Borges and his work. 

 

 

 

Students will review all the authors and short stories we read this year.
