We have been very busy in health.  We have discussed depression and how to activate help for a friend as well as how to support someone who is depressed.  We have also looked at time management and how good time management can help alleviate stress in our life.  We will be wrapping up this unit with a dicussion and classwork on decision making.

Today in class we discussed twins, birth, and pregnancy prevention.  The students should be able to tell you why abstinence is the best choice of birth control for teens.  Tomorrow we will be talking about Sexually Transmitted Infections.

Monday, February 27, 2006

Today in class the students received progress reports.  I also returned the mental health test that was taken on Wednesday and Thursday of last week.  This week we will be looking at the law and draws, identifying the consequences of drug use in Maryland.  We will also be continuing our Project Alert Game.

Tuesday, February 21, 2006

Today in class we finished see the video, Tobacco Horror Show.  Ask you child about the lady with the stoma as well as the emphysema experiment we did in class last Friday.

Today in class we took a 4 question formative assessment on the Red Flags Presentation.  Students also read an article in preparation for tomorrow when we will be completing a jig-saw activity.

We are discussing adolescent depression.  Students are learning the signs/symptoms as well as how to activate help for themself or for a friend. 

Did you know that....?

80% of depressed children go undiagnosed and untreated. Depression inhibits a student's attention, memory, language skills, and social skills.

Warning Signs of Adolescent Depression

Deep Sadness and or hopelessness

Long -lasting irritability, anger and or rage

Dramatic change in behavior, personality and or appearance

Withdrawal from friends, family and/or activities

Major changes in sleeping or eating habits

Marked change in levels of energy, motivation and/or concentration

Frequent absences from school or a significant drops in grades

Increased physical complaints such as headaches and stomachaches

Alcohol and/or drug use

Thoughts and/or talk of death or suicide.
