For chemistry classes

This should help!!! Here are the directions for and an example of the proper way to outline the assigned chapters of the Modern Chemistry text. I have used the first few sections of chapter one for my example. To access a printable version of this page click on the attachment below and open the attachment.

DIRECTIONS FOR OUTLINES FOR MODERN CHEMISTRY TEXTBOOK

1. Your outline should be organized around the “colored title names” found in the book.
2. Use the correct heading on the top right corner of your paper: your name, the date, a brief description of assignment, your class period.
3. On your outline list and underline the “colored title name” of the section.
4. Read the section and summarize some of the content. Your outline should include two sentences that summarize content from the section. One sentence should paraphrase one main point presented in the section. The second sentence should list one supporting statement related to the main point that you listed.
5. When hand written you should leave one or two blank spaces between adjacent sections. If typed you should double space between adjacent sections.
6. Special Feature sections (as listed on page XV in your text should be read but should not be outlined.
7. Outlines are graded on the basis of one-half of a point per “colored title” section. For example, a chapter containing thirty “colored title” sections will be worth fifteen points as a homework grade.

Chemistry is a physical science
Chemistry helps us understand the materials around us. Chemists do this by investigating their composition, structure, properties, and the changes they undergo.

Branches of chemistry
There are six chemistry areas of study identified in our textbook. Two examples are organic chemistry and analytical chemistry.

Basic research
This research is done to increase our knowledge about the properties of a substance. This research sometimes leads to accidental discoveries.

Applied research
This research is done to solve a known problem. A chemist’s research into replacements for harmful refrigerants would be one example.

Technological development
This typically involves producing and using products that improve our quality of life. The development of laser technology is an example.

At this point you would continue on with the same format for the remaining sections of the chapter. Remember that the Special Feature sections should be read but not outlined.

For Intro Secondary Science classes

POINTS OF EMPHASIS FOR FAMILIES OF ELEMENTS LAB

1.  Remember to keep your noise level down to an acceptable level.

2. Emphasis lab safety: a) move deliberately (no quick movements), b) assume all of the chemicals used during the lab are poisonous.

3. Wear goggles and aprons and wash your hands at the end of the lab.

4. Turn off all CPU's and monitors and cover them with the garbage bags.

5. Clean all test tubes with Alconox soap solution and a test tube brush.

6. Write all answers on your lab in complete sentences.

DIRECTIONS FOR OUTLINES FOR GIANCOLI PHYSICS TEXTBOOK

Directions for physics outlines:
1. Your outline should be organized around the numbered sections found in the book.
2. Use the correct heading on the top right corner of your paper: your name, the date, a brief description of assignment, your class period.
3. On your outline list and underline the title of the section.
6. Outlines are graded on the basis of one-half of a point per section. For example, a chapter that contains twenty sections will be worth ten points as a homework grade.

Science and Creativity.
Science is a creative activity that resembles other creative activities of the mind. Observations made by scientists require imagination that evolve into theories. The theories are inspirations that come from the minds of human beings.

Physics and its relation to other fields
At one time physics and chemistry were known collectively as natural philosophy. Physics is now considered the foundation for all of the sciences and scientists from every field of study use physics in their daily work.

Models, theories, and laws.
Scientists use models to help them understand observed phenomena. Theories are more complex than models because they give broader explanations and include quantitatively testable predictions.

At this point you would continue on with the same format for the remaining sections of the chapter.
