Sight Word Games
Go Fish
Write the sight words on 3"x5" cards. Make two sets of identical cards. Shuffle and deal the cards. Play the game using the regular game rules. (A variation would be to put science/social studies words on one set of cards and then write the definitions on the other cards. The players must ask for either a definition or a word.)
Word Dominoes
Write sight words on dominoes. Vary the way you group the words on the dominoes to make the game more interesting. This can be done with spelling words, science, math, or social studies words. Play the game like a regular domino game matching the words instead of the number of dots. This can also be done by having the child match beginning sounds.
Tic Tac Toe
This game can be played by drawing a tic tac toe diagram on paper. Each square is then filled in with a sight word. Now play tic tac toe. The only rule is that the child must be able to read the word in order to put an "x" or "o" into the square. Try it with all kinds of words that you are working on together. (A variation would be to choose words from the book that has just been read. This can be done before reading as a way to introduce difficult words or after reading to review difficult words.)
Concentration
Write the sight words on 3" x 5" cards. Make two cards for each word. Shuffle the cards and lay them out in rows. Play concentration by attempting to match and them read words.
Hangman
Spell sight words as you play hangman.
