  What is Rosebuds?

What is Rosebuds?

  • Began in 2003 through the Achievement Gap Program of HCPS under the auspices of the Office of Equity and Cultural Diversity Office.
  • Located at Halls Cross Roads Elementary School and George D. Lisby Elementary School at Hillsdale both located in the Aberdeen Community.
  • Developed by Constance Woodson (HCRES) and O'bette Jamison (GDLES), Parent Advocates for the Achievement Gap Program.
  • Mrs. Amy Behlert, guidance counselor at HCRES, and Mrs. Kathy Blythe, guidance counselor at GELES, provided assistance and support to the developers of the program.
  • Designed to help 4th and 5th grade girls discover the hidden rules of behavior and decorum and to guide them in character development.
  • During the 2005-2006 school year, there were 25 Rosebuds at Halls Cross Roads Elementary School and 20 Rosebuds at George D. Lisby Elementary School at Hiilsdale.
  • Each grade level meets with the sponsor for 30 minutes once a week.
  • Topics of discussion include self-awareness, friendship, etiquette, social discourse, honesty, and scholarship. 
  • Embedded in each activity and lesson are the core basics of character education.
  • Criteria for Rosebud selection include girls who have problems concerning behavior, girls who are model students, and/or girls who need a self-esteem boost.
  • Rosebuds are rated weekly by their teachers on 6 areas based around the Rosebud Language and Behvaior Guidelines. Their scores are recorded on a graph with a rose sticker.  For every 5 stickers, girls recieve a long stem silk rose to add to her bouquet.
  • Special Events include a visit to the Baltimore Symphony, recieving ettiquette lessons from a local consultant, and attending an Engligh Tea Party.
  • Levels of Implementation:
    • Elementary Level: Rosebuds
    • Middle School Level: Rose Blossoms
    • High School Level: Rose (currently not inplace)
  • This program was featured in the Baltimore Sun and was presented at the Maryland Multicultural Coalition in Annapolis, Maryland at their 2005 conference.
  • Mrs. Constance M. Woodson  and Mrs. O'Bette Jamison recieved this year's Women Making a Difference Award from the Havre de Grace Chapter of International Soroptimists.
