Writing terms to know

subject- who or what the sentence is about.

Ex:The tree is green--tree is the subject

predicate- what the subject is doing.

Ex: John clapped his hands.  clapped his hands is the predicate 

simple subject- single subject

Ex: John clapped his hands.  John is the simple subject.

simple predicate- single predicate

Ex: John clapped his hands.  clapped is the simple predicate.

compound subject- more than 1 subject joined by the word and

Ex: John and Joseph clapped their hands.  John and Jospeh are the compound subjects.

compound predicate- more than 1 predicate joined by the word and

Ex: John clapped his hands and stomped his feet.  Clapped and stomped are the compound predicates.

declarative sentence- ends with a period and gives a statement

ex: My birthday is in January.

imperative sentence- ends with a period and gives a command or request.

ex: Pass in your papers.

interrogative sentence- asks a question and ends with a question mark.

ex: Do you have your homework?

exclamatory sentence- ends with an exclamation point and shows excitement.

ex: Run!!
