Is there homework every night?
For Spanish and World Language Connections: Yes. Even if nothing is written, every student should study 15 minutes a night on vocabulary in the target language. For General Music, homework is more rare and will be announced. With FACS, there will be homework nearly every night and it will be something like a worksheet or small project.
What should I do if my child is absent?
There is an absantee binder in my classroom that contains the child's worksheets or work that they missed. If, for any reason, the absent binder is not updated, then the child must put a note in the "DO NOT FORGET ABOUT ME MISS LOETZ!!" folder hanging on my wall. This note should have the student's name, the date they were absent and a little blurb asking me what he/she has missed. If your child has any make-up work, then they must place it in my "Make-up Work" folder also hanging on my wall. With all these avenues, there really is no reason for a child not to have absent work completed. If, however, there are any questions, please email me and I will get back to you.
What should I do if my child isn't getting it?
Learning a second language is hard I don't expect every student to get it right away. If your child is doing ALL of their homework every night, and studying 15 minutes a night and is still recieving poor grades, then I will offer after school tutoring for my Spanish students who need it. For World Language Connections, I don't usually offer a tutoring session since the class is more focused on culture than language.
If your child would like to take advantage of these tutoring sessions, however, then they MUST contact me before hand so I know to stay or know to get to school early.
What is ZAP?
ZAP stands for Zeros Aren't Permitted. If a student is missing three or more homework assignments, teachers may ZAP the child, have them report to the ATS room in the Main Office, and call their parent explaining what they have not turned in. The child then may complete the task for partial or full credit depending on the teacher. I follow the ZAP program and will ZAP a child if I am missing at least three homework assignments. For the most part I will allow the child to make up the work for full credit, but it depends on the assignment
