                                           AVID FAQs

  • What is AVID?   AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID is an in-school academic support program for grades 6-12 that prepares students for college eligibility and success. The AVID program targets those in the academic middle, and encourages them to take more rigorous courses
  • What is AVID NOT?  AVID is not a remedial program.  It is not a program for students already successful in advanced courses, or for students already receiving academic support.
  • What do we do in AVID?  In the AVID class, students learn study habits, time management skills, note-taking skills, and test-taking tips.  Students learn about different colleges and college programs, and particpate in teambuilding activities to promote classroom culture. Students also participate in tutorial and inquiry sessions to increase their success in their academic classes.
  • What are tutorials?  Tutorials are small group sessions in which AVID students use high level inquiry skills to increase their understanding of their academic classes.  Students come to class prepared with at least 2 questions. In a small group, the students work together to come up with the answers to all of the questions.
