AVID Overview

The AVID Class:

The AVID class has three main parts to it:  WICR Lessons, Teambuilding/college awareness, and Tutorial Sessions.

WICR stands for Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, and Reading.  Every AVID lesson will have some form of each of the 4 components. In these lessons, students learn study skills such as organization, note-taking, test-taking skills, time management, etc.  AVID lessons also focus on writing and speaking skills.

Teambuilding and college awareness activities are designed to encourage students to act as leaders in their class, broaden their exposure to higher education, and to build classroom culture.

Tutorials are held once a week, beginning around the second month of school.   During tutorials, students work in small group with a tutor (parents, college students, high school students) and the sessions are designed to encourage students to use higher level questioning skills to find the answers to their questions.
