ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR PARENTS, FAMILIES, AND STUDENTS

06/02/10

Parents and Families,

Your child will be performing scenes from the novel that we have been reading since March (Let the Circle be Unbroken) on Thursday, June 3rd.  If your child wants to earn BONUS POINTS, he or she may bring in a costume to change into for the performance. Students in 8-11 have the option of wearing their costumes to school and bringing a uniform to change into at 9:30.

Thanks,

Ms. Brown

05/25/10

Parents and Families,

Your child received his or her progress report for language arts today.  This will be the last progress report I will print for the quarter.  Take the time to review discuss your child's grades.  I will not accept any late work after Friday, June 4th.  I have indicated on the report whether your child is on the retention list.  If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call the school to speak with me or set up an appointment with the team.

04/27/10

Parents and Families,

Your child will receive his or her progress report for language arts on Friday, April 30th.  Please take the time to review and discuss your child's grades.  If he or she is on the 8th retention list, it is not too late to make up missing work and get on the track to passing.

04/19/10

Parents and Families,

The 3rd quarter officially ends Wednesday, April 7th.  Report card night will be Wednesday, April 21st at 6:30pm.  We strongly encourage you to come by the school to pick up your child's report card and discuss your child's grades with the 8th grade team.

03/22/10

Parents and Families,

Spring is here! That brings one of my favorite times of the school year: novel reading! Students have started reading, Let the Circle be Unbroken by Mildred D. Taylor.  We had a brand new class set of novels donated by some wonderful people who donated to my project at www.donorschoose.org.  Your student is NOT required to purchase a novel, however, he or she is responsible for completing reading assignments during class.  Students who miss class for any reason MUST stay during lunch or after school to make up the reading, or they will not be able to participate in their group literature circles.  If you think that your child would benefit from having a novel of his or her own, then you are welcome to borrow one from the library or purchase one, but note that students will NOT be able to bring any of the class books home to make up reading.

Thanks for your support!

Ms. Brown

EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY!

Starting Tuesday, October 20th, I will be using coach class to screen films that will support student learning about the topic of the Holocaust as they read Night. After watching, students can complete an assignment based on their viewing to earn extra credit points. We will be watching the following films:

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

The Devil's Arithmetic

Life is Beautiful

If your child cannot stay on Tuesday, I am also available to screen films on other days (by special request) and during lunchtime. Also, these films are available to rent from any local Blockbuster/movie rental store. 10/14/09

Parents and Families-

Monday, October 19th marks the official start of our unit on the novel, Night, by Elie Wiesel. It is a true account of Elie Wiesel's experience, as a young Orthodox Jew, of being sent with his family to the German concentration camps at Auschwitz and Buchenwald during the Second World War. This is a difficult topic to read about, and I encourage you to discuss it with your child. 10/05/09

Parents and Families-

All students must have purchased (or borrowed from the library) a copy of the novel "Night" by Elie Wiesel by today. Students who have not yet purchased a copy may give me $4 to purchase it for them. Anybody who does not get a copy of the novel will receive zeros on assignments until he or she has it. Thanks for your help!

10/05/09 Parents and Families-

As the cold and flu season is already upon us, the 8th grade team asks for your help in sending your child to school with his or her own supply of tissues. Also, we would appreciate anybody that would be willing to get clorox wipes to send with their child to school. This helps us keep desks and other surfaces clean and sanitary.

Thank you for your help!

09/21/09 Parents and Families-

Please note that I distributed your child's progress report for language arts on Monday, September 21st. You need to sign the progress report to acknowledge that you saw it and your child needs to give that report back to me by Thursday, September 24th.

Thank you,

Ms. Brown
